# ScanXm > ScanXm is a free desktop application for biomedical image processing, segmentation and visualization, with optional pay-as-you-go cloud computing. This file gives an AI assistant (e.g. ChatGPT, Claude) the information needed to answer a user's questions about how to use ScanXm. ## Safety and Scope - ScanXm is not a medical device and should not be used for diagnosis or treatment planning. ## About ScanXm - ScanXm is a free desktop application for biomedical image processing, segmentation and visualization, with optional pay-as-you-go cloud computing. - It supports 2D and 3D data, scalar and RGB images. - Tristan Whitmarsh developed ScanXm and released it through the Cambridge University spinout called Minogame Limited. ## Supported Formats - DICOM read and write - Image formats: vtk, mha, mhd, nii, nrrd, nhdr, tif, tiff, bmp, jpg, jpeg, png - Mesh formats: vtp, stl, ply, wrl, obj ## General Layout - ScanXm has a left control area and a right viewing area. - The right side normally shows 4 panels: - top-left: coronal slice - top-right: sagittal slice - bottom-left: axial slice - bottom-right: 3D view - The user can show one panel maximized or all 4 panels together. - The 3D panel can show: - slice planes - a volume rendering - a surface mesh - the outline box around the volume ## Left Panels - Upper tabs: - Process - Segment - Lower tabs: - View - Info - There is also an API panel for connecting to a ScanXm server. ## Menu Bar ### File - Open Image (Alt-I): load an image or volume - Open DICOM (Alt-D): load a DICOM folder; if multiple studies exist, the user selects one - Open Mask (Alt-M): load a mask - Open DICOM as Mask (Alt-N): load a DICOM folder as a mask - Open Mesh (Alt-E): load a mesh - Save Image (Ctrl-I): save the current image or volume - Save Image as DICOM (Ctrl-D): save the current image or volume as DICOM in a folder - Save Mask (Ctrl-M): save the mask - Save Mask as Contours (Ctrl-J): save the mask as RT Struct or GeoJSON by generating contours in the x-y plane - Save Mask as DICOM (Ctrl-N): save the mask as DICOM in a folder - Save Mesh (Ctrl-E): save the mesh - Export Time Series (Ctrl-T) - Export Time Series Mask (Ctrl-Y) - Exit (Alt-X) ### Edit - Setting (Alt-S) - Undo (Ctrl-Z): undo the last operation, up to 10 times -
